Tomahawk Fire Department Conducts Training on New Ice/Water Craft; Wildfires

The Tomahawk Fire Department has been busy over the past few weeks with several training exercises, including work with a new piece of equipment. Fitting for this time of year, as we transition from winter to spring; the TFD shared they recently completed ice rescue training with their new rapid deployment, water rescue craft, which they described as a game-changer in emergency response. They said the inflatable will allow their responders to safely reach victims faster and more efficiently during water and ice emergencies, improving their ability to save lives. They also shared gratitude to Billy Bob's and Outboards for their generous donation allowing this purchase. Earlier this month, the Tomahawk Fire Department also teamed up with the Wisconsin DNR for their annual spring wildland fire training. They noted, "Staying sharp and ready for wildfire season is critical, and we appreciate the knowledge and hands-on experience." While wildfires haven't been prevalent in the Northwoods so far this year, crews in other areas of the state have been quite busy. Oneida County Economic Development Corp Conducting Housing Survey
Published on 03/28/2025 under News Housing around the Northwoods has been an area of focus in recent years. One group is studying the topic and seeking some public input. The Oneida County Economic Development Corporation is conducting a comprehensive study to address growing concerns over housing affordability and availability in the county. As part of that process, and to ensure a comprehensive analysis, they're seeking input from the public. They said, "This public survey is open to anyone who lives, works, goes to school in, or spends time in Oneida County." Responses are anonymous, and they are used to identify trends in what kinds of housing (are) needed and at what prices, along with any other housing concerns participants may have. The larger study will also analyze market trends and interview local stakeholders, along with incorporating the survey data. Tony Pharo, OCEDC Executive Director says, "This study will provide valuable data to guide decision-making and help create solutions that benefit both residents and local businesses." The survey will be available online through Friday April 11. We'll include the link in the online version of the story. The results will be published in May.

Northwoods National Cemetery Hosting Vietnam War Veterans Day Ceremony
Published on 03/28/2025 under News Officials will be commemorating those who served in Vietnam during a brief ceremony here in the Northwoods this morning. Tomorrow is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, recognizing the anniversary of the ground force withdrawal from Vietnam. To mark the occasion, a bit later this morning, the Northwoods National Cemetery in Harshaw will hold a special program. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, more than 57,000 Wisconsinites served in Vietnam, more than 1,200 never returned. Northwoods National Cemetery in Harshaw officially opened in August of 2020, becoming the second national cemetery in Wisconsin. It is located along Lakewood Road. The program is set to begin at 11:30am.

DNR/Conservation Congress Fish and Wildlife Hearings and Surveys Return in April
Published on 03/28/2025 under News Each spring Wisconsin Conservation Congress and the DNR offer an opportunity for interested parties to weigh in all things outdoors. The annual Fish and Wildlife Spring Hearings are right around the corner, and the partners recently shared some of the details. A familiar format will return with hearings held simultaneously across all 72 counties. DNR staff and WCC delegates will be on hand at these spring hearings to discuss local issues, answer questions and open dialogue. Those will all take place on the evening of Monday, April 14: (A full list of locations is available on the DNR website.)•Lincoln County at Lincoln County Service Center in Merrill•Oneida County at James Williams Middle School Auditorium in Rhinelander•Vilas County at Boulder Junction Community CenterThat same evening, a three-day, online public input survey will go live. The responses are advisory only, and the questions are currently available for review on the DNR website. There are more than 70 yes/no questions, covering a wide variety of topics. Just a few of the many examples include: the use of lead ammo and tackle; extending the turkey season in far northern Wisconsin (zones 6 and 7); creating a military/veteran waterfowl season; allowing wardens to enforce local ordinances; and a number of lake or river specific questions related to fishing regulations. We'll offer up a reminder as that date approaches.

Aspirus: Measure Liquid Medications

Oral liquid medications are involved in more than 80 percent of pediatric home medication errors, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. That's why Aspirus is encouraging caregivers to measure. Olivia Bishop, an Aspirus Pharmacy Resident. "If we're not measuring it correctly, we can either be overdosing our patients, which puts them at risk of side effects, or underdosing, which means the infection or issue we're treating isn't being addressed." To support national guidelines, Aspirus pharmacies provide tools like oral syringes with clear milliliter markings to help caregivers measure medications accurately. Bishop says, "You want to make sure you're using a device that has lines for milliliters so you know you're getting the exact dose." She says your pharmacist can walk you through the process. Aspirus has also implemented milliliter-only instructions on prescription labels to further enhance clarity and accuracy. This approach helps caregivers avoid common mistakes, such as misreading units or misusing household utensils.

Tomahawk Hatchets Claim First High School State Hockey Championship
Published on 03/10/2025 under Sports The Tomahawk Hatchet hockey team capped off the most successful season in school history by capturing the program's first State Championship. The Hatchets defeated the Amery Warriors 5-3 to claim the division 2 crown. Known for their explosive offense throughout the season, Tomahawk wasted little time jumping out in front with Jett Reilly scoring on a breakaway just 42 seconds into the game. Amery tied the game a few minutes later when forward Jacob Maxon beat Hatchet goaltender Trevor Seliskar from distance. While the Hatchets controlled play in the first, they were unable to regain their lead. The second period saw Amery take their first lead of the game when Elliot Greene put a tough angle shot into the net for a power play goal. The Hatchets tied the game and then regained the lead with successive goals, Jonah Dickens then Brayden Lamer with the power play. Sawyer Hanna scored what was eventually the game-winning goal early in the third period, tucking in a rebound off a Lamer shot from the point. The teams then traded scores to close out the game, with Reilly providing an insurance goal, followed by another Amery power play goal by Gavin Humpal. While Amery pulled their goaltender for an extra skater for the final three minutes, they were unable to generate many scoring chances, and the Hatchets held on for victory. Tomahawk was the consensus number 1 rated team in division two throughout the season and finished with a 25-3 record including the regular and postseason. The victory was deemed 'mission accomplished' by coach Dewey Reilly after the Hatchets, the smallest school to field a hockey program, were knocked out in the first round of the state tournament in 2024.

Tomahawk Girls Basketball Season Recap
Published on 03/02/2025 under Sports The Tomahawk Hatchet Girls Basketball Team had their season come to an end on Friday, February 28 with a WIAA Regional Semi Final loss at Menomonie Nation. The final was 59-26 in favor of the Eagles. Tomahawk finishes their season with a 12-13 record. The twelve wins for Tomahawk are the most wins in a season since the 2002-03 season and tied for the fourth most wins in a season. Tomahawk won a playoff game for the second consecutive season, with their 50-35 win over Sturgeon Bay in the WIAA Regional Quarter Finals. Tomahawk finished the Great Northern Conference season with a 4-8 record. The Hatchets had three members of their team recognized on the all conference team. Junior Freya Alberg was Second Team All-Conference. Senior Claire Albert and Freshman Lizzy Long were both Honorable Mention All-Conference. Freya Alberg led Tomahawk with 348 points and 261 rebounds. Claire Albert had 249 points and led the Hatchets with 93 assists and 69 steals. Albert also set the school record for most career assists with 296 and most career steals with 239. Albert holds or is tied for five additional school records. The Hatchets tied a school record in their win over Elcho in December, when they held the Hornets to just 10 points.  Tomahawk will graduate three seniors, Claire Albert, Gracie Long and Lydia Ziert.

Hatchet Girls Basketball Team Loses Playoff Game
Published on 03/01/2025 under Sports The Hatchet girls' basketball squad had their season come to an end at Menominee Nation High School in Keshena Friday, losing in the WIAA Division 3 Regional Semifinal, 59-26. In her final game, Claire Albert finished with 10 points. Freya Alberg had 15 points. Unfortunately, Alberg, Albert, and Anita Ziert were the only three Hatchets to find the scoreboard.  Tomahawk finishes the 2024-25 season with a 12-13 record and a 4-8 Great Northern Conference record. The Hatchets graduate three seniors, who are Albert, Lydia Ziert, and Gracie Long. The 12 wins by the Lady Hatchets is the most wins by a Hatchets squad since the 2002-03 season and the seventh most wins in a season in school history.

Hatchet Boys Basketball Team Loses Regular Season Finale
Published on 02/28/2025 under Sports The Hatchet boys' basketball squad finished their 2024-25 season on a sour note, losing to Antigo Thursday night, 72-52.  Tomahawk will finish the season on a 15-game losing streak, a 4-20 record, and an 0-12 record in Great Northern Conference play.  The Hatchets are the #11 seed in the WIAA Division 3 Regional Quarterfinal. Tomahawk begins postseason play against #6 seed Menominee Nation Tuesday night. If the Hatchets pull of the upset, they will play at #3 seed Seymour next Friday. Tune in for the Fehrman Orthodontics Radio Pregame Show at 6:35 and opening tip at 7:00. Alex Koch and Terry Timm will be in the broadcast booth.
